SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Darren Muljo
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, August 7\, for a special History Happy Hour aboard the historic Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum featuring guest speaker Darren Muljo.\nDarren will present the remarkable story behind the July 17\, 1999\, consecration of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw. His presentation will explore the years of determination\, advocacy\, and compassion that led to the wreck site being officially recognized as the final resting place of the 29 crew members lost on November 10\, 1975. From the recovery of the Fitzgerald’s bell to the international consecration ceremony\, this presentation tells the powerful story of how the wreck came to be protected with the dignity it deserves.\nFor Darren\, this history is deeply personal. His grandfather\, Ransom E. “Ray” Cundy\, served as the Edmund Fitzgerald’s watchman and was one of the 29 men who never returned home. Following the tragedy\, Darren’s mother\, Cheryl Rozman\, devoted years to advocating for the crew and their families\, helping lead the efforts that resulted in the consecration of the wreck site and strengthened protections for this sacred place.\nAs a member of the family who stood aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw during the historic 1999 ceremony\, Darren will share firsthand memories\, personal reflections\, and the extraordinary story of remembrance\, perseverance\, and respect that continues to honor the legacy of the Edmund Fitzgerald and her crew.\nDon’t miss this moving presentation that connects the history of the Icebreaker Mackinaw\, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald\, and the people whose dedication ensured that the final resting place of the 29 sailors would be forever honored and protected.
