Twenty years ago, the historic USCGC Mackinaw (WAGB-83) began a new chapter. On June 10, 2006, after 62 years of dedicated service on the Great Lakes, she was decommissioned in a ceremony held in Cheboygan, Michigan. Then, on June 21, 2006, the beloved icebreaker sailed to Mackinaw City carrying civilian passengers and was moored at her permanent home at the eastern end of the old SS Chief Wawatam railroad dock.
Today, twenty years later, the Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum proudly preserves her legacy as a place where history comes alive for visitors.

Join us on Saturday, June 20 at 7:00 pm for a festive 20th Anniversary Celebration on the deck of this historic Great Lakes icebreaker. Enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres, live music, a cash bar, and an exciting silent auction—all while surrounded by the beauty and history of Mackinaw. The evening will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display viewed right from aboard the ship.
